Is Building UP Easier than Building DOWN?

The trend in many large UK cities, particularly in London has long been to extend underneath with a basement excavation, but with Government announcements and statistics showing that four out of ten properties have had loft conversions and extensions. It could now be easier to extend into the roof space and upwards instead.

This could see London home owners being able to add a further two levels to their property, up to the roof line of any adjoining building. Building up has been seen as way of overcoming the London housing crisis, offering a way to add space in a cost effective way.

Simple planning applications could be approved if no objections are received.  The main reasons for neighbours blocking plans could be if their light is blocked. It is hoped that the planning approval process will only take around a week to go through rather than the traditional months.
